#817 · Other ways to show a summary of changes across players

Ross, on round 3: "I like the cards, i think these are really good", "I don't want every player listed in the improving/declining sections - we would just want highlights here", and "still not 100% sure on having them in the player picker". The per-player cards stay as they are in 817-tab-summaries.html. This file is six other places a summary of changes across the squad could live, none of them marks on the player picker.

Illustrative only. Nothing is computed and nothing clicks. The names are the save's; some facts echo the December capture (de Ligt +3, Sommer's Physical −3, Kukonki's new role, Martínez's new contract, Onana's December) and the rest are made up to fill the shapes. Every list is highlights: the top few, never the whole squad.

Highlights page, before a player is picked

Player evolution · nobody picked yet, and a Highlights entry at the top of the rail

The cards you like, one level up: the same five, but across the squads ticked on the rail, each listing at most three players. It's what Player evolution shows before anybody is picked, which today is just "pick a player". One click on a name opens his Summary. The rail stays a plain list; the only addition is a Highlights entry at its top to come back here.

For
  • The cards you already like, so it reads as one design: squad highlights here, his details on his Summary.
  • Highlights only, three a card, with a count of the rest.
  • Fills the empty "pick a player" state rather than adding anything to the rail.
Against
  • Once you've picked somebody it's a click away, not in view.
  • Squad-wide, so it overlaps Squad comparison's own Summary when that's built.

A highlights strip

Player evolution · one line above the rail and the tabs, always in view

One slim line across the top of the tab, holding the handful of things worth a look, each a chip that opens that player's Summary. It stays put whoever is picked. Two versions: the chips themselves, or just the counts until you open it.

For
  • Always in view, so it's obvious something has happened, whoever you're looking at.
  • Tiny: one line, and nothing on the player picker.
Against
  • Room for six or seven chips, so the wording has to be terse.
  • The same line repeats on every visit; it could become wallpaper.

What a capture changed

Data capture · straight after a capture, and kept for each one

The news arrives when the data does. Finish capturing December and the tab says what that capture changed across the squad, the top few of each kind, each linking to the player. Every past capture keeps its own, so November's is still there.

For
  • The moment you want to know is right after capturing, and that's where you already are.
  • One month at a time keeps it naturally short.
  • Nothing added to Player evolution at all.
Against
  • A month at a time: slow drift over a season (Sommer's three single drops) never stands out in any one digest.
  • It's on Data capture, away from where you look at players.

For
  • Tells it in the order it happened, so "what's new lately" is the top of the list.
  • One feed covers attributes, roles, form and contracts together.
Against
  • Over a season it gets long, so it leans on a rule for what "highlights only" keeps.
  • A month at a time, like idea 3, so slow drift needs its own line (as Sommer's does here).

A change map

Squad comparison's Summary, or a "Squad" view on Player evolution

The whole squad on one grid: a row per player, a column per Settings category, then role, form and figures. Each cell is coloured by how far it moved, so the eye goes straight to the colour. "Movers only" folds everyone with nothing to show into one line, and the biggest movers sort to the top. Click a cell to open that player's tab.

For
  • The whole squad at a glance, and the colour makes it obvious who's moving.
  • The categories you liked on the cards become the columns, straight from Settings.
  • One look shows a player moving on several fronts at once (Mainoo up on attributes, down on figures).
Against
  • A grid, not highlights; "Movers only" is what keeps it short.
  • Columns in different units (attributes, a rating, quarters) need care so the colours mean the same thing.

A movers chart

Squad comparison's Summary, or a graph placed from Graph setup

Two of the cards on one chart: attribute change across, form up the side. Each corner says something different: improving and in form, declining but still playing well, and so on. The app's scatter charts already have quadrant labels, so this could be a graph placed like any other. Only the outliers get names; click a dot to open his Summary.

Loanees in amber. Dots without names: no change worth one.
For
  • Two signals at once, and the combinations are the interesting part (Sommer declining but playing well).
  • It's a scatter like the app's others, so it could be stored and placed through Graph setup.
Against
  • A senior squad piles up on the zero line, since most first-teamers' attributes don't move in half a season.
  • Needs both statistics and attributes, so no U18s.

How they fit together

My pick for Player evolution is 1, the highlights page. It's the per-player cards one level up, top three each way, and it lives in the tab's empty "pick a player" state rather than on the picker. With it, the rail's arrows and the Moving most group can go.

5, the change map, is my pick for Squad comparison's Summary, the squad-wide view the issue already has there ("Improving most and declining most"). 3, what a capture changed, is cheap and sits well beside either: the news at the moment the data arrives.

2, the strip, and 4, the feed, overlap 1 and 3; 6, the chart, is a graph, and could be placed through Graph setup whichever way the rest goes.
